Navigating Life's Unexpected Turns With Grace
Brooke Slade
This new chapter I’m in — this beginning — would you believe me if I told you I felt it coming a year ago? I didn’t know how my life would change, but I sensed a shift brewing.
I’d grown tired of trying to create a joy-filled life in a place I didn’t love. I kept pushing myself to find contentment, to “bloom where I was planted,” convincing myself that if I just changed my perspective, life would blossom. But it didn’t.
Eventually, I realized I couldn’t keep forcing joy where it was hard to find. (And I say personal joy — because the joy my kids and family bring me is unwavering and ever-present.) So I let go. I decided to stop trying so hard and trust that life — and God — would make room for what was next.
Around that time, I found a simple gold pendant necklace with a mother-of-pearl design: the sun rising over water. I loved it immediately, and when I read the description — “new beginnings” — it felt like a sign. A reminder of the new mercies God gives us every day.
So, I bought it. I put it on and started preparing for my “new beginning,” not knowing when or how it would come. I decluttered our home, donated what we didn’t need, and prayed for the strength to step into whatever was ahead.
And then… life changed — in one of the hardest, most heartbreaking ways imaginable. My family experienced a tragedy that required us to do the unimaginable, uprooting our family and starting over very abruptly. In the midst of it all, one day I caught my reflection in the mirror. Through tears, I saw my pendant — the sun rising over water — and I remembered: this is what I’ve been preparing for.
It reminded me that I can do hard things.
So I dug in. I deactivated my socials, made myself fully available for my family, and supported them with everything I had. It wasn’t easy — we’re still healing — but I am learning how to be thankful for this chapter. It brought me a deeper understanding of grace, compassion, and my own strength.
From this time, I learned some valuable lessons that I try to keep with me—
Sometimes, we feel change coming long before we understand it — trust that intuition.
Letting go of control can make space for unexpected transformation.
Preparation isn’t always for the moment you want — sometimes it’s for the moment you need.
Even in heartbreak, there can be renewal, clarity, and grace.
Strength isn’t something you find — it’s something life calls out of you.
Have you ever felt a shift coming — that quiet knowing that something in your life was about to change? If you connected with this share, I would love to hear from you. How have you recovered from quick and unexpected life changes?
Your support means everything as I continue building this space with intention.
